An Ongoing Story by Selomon

[Author’s Note: This is going to be an ongoing weekly story. I began this on another platform and have been drawn to continue its story. It starts out pretty rough before any divine wisdom gets dropped, so if you are not a fan of dark stories right now, maybe check out THIS instead… Now, on to the story!]

There were movies about aliens before the attack happened. It lasted one or two days in the films. I guess that's why they're movies though.

It was nothing like that. I was at work, twenty stories up, and I see this huge mushroom of fire balloon up into the sky. The ripple of wind nearly broke all the windows. It seemed like everything in that moment had stopped. Everyone's complete attention was focused on one thing. It was as if the entire world had disappeared, except the explosion.

Every person in that building stopped what they were doing and watched out the windows. We were all in shock. Then after a few seconds, more explosions. Smaller ones though. They kept coming again and again. Suddenly the silence was broken up by the screams of millions of people running as fast as they could down the street and the rest of the world snapped back.

The looks on everyone's face sent the most terrifying feeling I've ever felt. It went through my whole body. Sounds that were separate from the explosions crept in and were slowly getting louder. The sounds from whatever weapons they had were disturbing. It sounded like a mix between smashing glass and a giant cobra hiss

Everyone started looking around at each other, waiting for someone to start talking, someone to make the first move. We stood there, I stood there, for what seemed like an eternity. The screams became louder and the explosions were drawing near and that's when everyone stopped looking at each other and started running as fast as they could. Eyes were not met, they were ignored. People were not people, but objects, obstacles that needed to be climbed over, plowed, anything to get away as fast as possible.

I started thinking that maybe it was another terrorist attack. It seemed that was what everyone else thought. The stairs that almost always went untouched, were being abused. A few people frantically waited for an elevator.

It was a complete mess. Nothing but a giant, chaotic mess. These people, hundreds, thousands, all fearing for their lives and trying to bull rush their way down what seemed like a million steps. I saw a few people jumping out the windows. I sometimes wonder what if I would have jumped. I wouldn't have had to see some of the stuff that I did. But then I also wouldn’t have seen the most incredible thing that came after all of that stuff.

The entire way down those stairs was nothing less than a stampede. Men and women were being trampled. When thousands of people are pushing each other, knowing that they may die, it's impossible to stop or turn around. It seemed like an eternity. I believed that was what hell must be like.

When I miraculously reached the bottom level and made it out of the building, everything became much more real. Those strange sounds were so loud they almost drowned out the screams. Everyone in their panicked state kept running and running as far away from the explosions and hisses as possible. My only thought then was to run as fast as I could away from them.

The adrenaline that was coursing through me had me running faster than I ever thought possible. I ran without looking back for a long time. When I decided to look back, the skyscrapers were far enough away to see something I never thought possible. What I saw changed everything.

There was a huge ship hovering above the city. It almost looked like a gigantic blue bird. A thin, glowing, blue light wrapped around the center and on the edges of the wings. The rest of it was shiny greyish black. Around it was smaller, similarly shaped, ships.

The city was on fire. Some of the skyscrapers had tipped and fallen, creating plumes of brown dust. Behind that mess, night was beginning to sneak in. Panic seeped in and I kept running away from the disturbing scene.

After seeing my first alien ship, I must have been running for hours. Then, the adrenaline began to fade, and I was starting to feel the effects of my panicked run out of the city. My legs ached like never before. I was hungry, thirsty, and very alone.
