After I got far enough away and darkness began to fall, I found a small rural neighborhood and decided I should rest and find something to calm my growling stomach.

There wasn't a single car in sight and none of the houses had any lights on. Small houses with small yards lined the street with smoke from the original explosion fading, but still visible. At the end of the street, houses formed a big circle with no outlet. Each side had five or six houses, with four of them built around the curve.

I knocked on a few doors just to be sure no one was there. I had this sick feeling like everyone was in it for themselves now. The third house around the curve had a purple-colored door. It seemed like a good home, so I went there. There was something about it that made me feel safer than any of the other houses.

I went in after the fifth loud knock and yelled around just to be sure I was alone. When I flipped the light switch, a few lights came on. It was the first good feeling I had since seeing that mushroom cloud in the city.

There was no one in the house. I looked around in all of the rooms and went over to the kitchen. Inside the fridge was milk, water, orange juice, leftovers, probably from the night before the attack, and a small pizza box. I grabbed the gallon of water, leftovers, and the pizza box and quietly set them all on the table.

First, I chugged a bunch of water. When my throat was soothed and thirst began to fade, I ate all of the leftovers. Then drank more water. My headache began to clear up. I had the thought to turn on the tv.

There were evacuation instructions scrolling across the bottom of the screen. A small map of the local area was marked in red and green. I was still in shock about the attack and confused about what to do. Then a message from the president appeared. I was hoping it would give me a better idea of what was happening.

"My fellow Americans," she began.

"There's no point in denying what is happening, as that would do us no good. We are under attack. When I say "we" I mean us, planet Earth," when she said that my stomach felt like it got hit by a sledgehammer. It hurt so much that I nearly threw up all of the food I ate.

"The sooner we, as humans, accept this and work together to defeat our true enemy, the better chance we'll have. The attackers are not of this world and seem to be here for one reason, to take our planet.”

"There have been multiple attacks in over half of the states and one-hundred and thirty coordinated attacks across the globe. The attacks have been primarily confined to heavily populated areas. The safest thing for you is to gather what you can carry and head out immediately to the designated areas marked in green. Use whatever you can to defend yourselves from our aggressors.

We are setting up camps around the country to keep everyone safe. We can give basic training and supplies to those who can make it. Our entire world is in jeopardy, remember we are not divided by countries anymore. We are all one people. Just as this country was brought together by a tragedy, now the world will come together.

Good luck to each and every one of you and may God be with you," her message faded out and the map of the local camps came up again. I grabbed a pen and paper and wrote down the locations of the closest ones.

The speech gave me an idea of what was happening, but it wasn’t something I thought I would ever hear. An attack on our entire world?! I began breathing heavy, feeling like I was in some kind of nightmare.

I cried for the first time in fourteen years. That was the first time I've ever gone to sleep thinking that the world might not be there when I woke up. That was the first time I've ever been that scared. That was the first time I've felt that helpless. That was the first time I was ever thankful I didn't have much of a family. That was the first time I started praying.
