There were guards walking both outside the fence and inside. Most of the civilians looked petrified. Some of them seemed to have lost their minds. I noticed there were a lot of different families huddled together, but there were more people that were alone.

I walked around the entire perimeter. It took about twenty minutes. Eyes followed my every step. I wasn’t sure what I was there to find. Still, I was looking.

They never told me I couldn’t leave, but I could already tell it wouldn’t be as easy as just walking through the gates. I tried not to think too much about that. I had to keep focused otherwise those heavy emotions would drown me.

Far off in the distance, I thought I could see an alien ship, but it was too small to tell. It was odd that there were none in sight. The mothership I saw hovering above the city was nowhere to be seen.

“Better stop looking so conspicuous,” I heard someone whisper near me.

I looked behind me and saw an older lady leaned down tying her shoe. She didn’t look up. Instead, she kept talking.

“If you’re looking for something, try not to show the whole world. Otherwise, people will start to wonder what you’re looking for.”
“Are you?” I asked her.
“Am I what?” she said back.
“Are you wondering what I’m looking for?”
“No. I have my own mission. I’m just not showing it off to the armed guards,” she told me.
“I’m not actually sure what I’m looking for. Something just told me I needed to come this way. Some feeling was drawing me here. It sounds crazy,” I replied.
“No, not really. Fate has a way of placing us where we need to be, when we need to be there.”

She stood up and walked away without saying another word. I stood there for a long time thinking about what she had said. Instead of trying to look for something, I decided to let it go. Whatever reason would make itself known when it was the right time.
