That night, I was unable to sleep. The curfew bell had rung, causing us to hide the tablet and head back to our bunks. It was dark, but I could see the moon shining behind dark clouds.
We split apart walking different ways. She was staying in a separate building. I turned around to make sure she wasn’t playing me. My brain thought of many possibilities that she could be a secret agent trying to find people who were disobedient or who could pose a threat to whatever operations they had going on.
But my gut was telling me something else. I wasn’t sure which one to trust yet. This was a very important junction it seemed. I went inside to find my bunk and try to get some sleep.
The room around me was filled with sounds of coughing, snoring, scratching, and people readjusting as they slept. It was too hard for me to sleep after what I had learned. If I really was trapped, then we were all a pawn to whatever intergalactic chess game was being played out right now.
I didn’t like that thought. I don’t remember too much of high school. But I do remember one of my teachers once said, “Fate is a reaction to the choices we make.” That kept playing over and over in my mind. Through the whole night.
The sun started to peak when the first few people started to wake up and leave the room. My brain had been on overdrive since talking to whoever she was. I didn’t even know her name.
My stomach growled and reminded me that I had to put something in it. My throat was also dry. They didn’t provide us with a lot of water. I decided to get up and head to the mess hall.
There were already a bunch of people there. They were eating potatoes and bread. I got some food and water and sat down away from everyone. The water canisters were fuller than the last time I got some, so I chugged one cup and filled up a second before sitting down.
I ate to stop my stomach from growling. It wasn’t the most pleasant food, but at least I wasn’t hungry anymore. I was about to get up when that lady sat down by me.
“I told you, I’m not sure I can help right now,” I said quietly so only she could hear.
“It’s okay. Listen, my name is Valory. I am just trying to figure out what’s really going on. If you don’t want to help, I understand. But I have more to say if you’re interested. Come find me if you want to hear.”
She got up and left the building. I didn’t know what to do, so I sat and thought about everything for a while. Eventually, my ass started to hurt. In order for me to think properly, I need to be more comfortable.
Outside it was cloudy. I went to my bunk to lay down and process what I wanted to do. Only one other person was there. They were reading a book intently. It was weird how it almost made me feel like I was at summer camp. Seeing them so into their book while they laid on their bunk was a warm moment I will always cherish.
It’s interesting how sometimes the small things can affect us so deeply. I realized then that I needed to help Valory. Something inside me told me it was the right path. It was time to make the choices that fate would react to.
