Bluebird Chapter 6

Traveling by foot in such a strong wind wasn’t easy. It blew me around all day. The bag the doctor had given me was banging into my legs and other uncomfortable areas. Breathing was a task in the strong gusts. It was like trying to breathe with my head out the window. The thing that annoyed me most was how loud it was blowing into my ears.

Not being able to hear what was around the freaking corner terrified me. The wind made me feel more vulnerable. The base I was heading towards was about 25 miles away from where I started. Every step felt like forever. I had to take a break after 8 miles.

City had turned to suburbs which turned into a more rural landscape with tiny wind turbines lined up on the horizon. I was sticking to the back roads. I hoped there would be more houses or trees to hide in. Honestly, the main highway frightened me. They were the most used in our society.

My first 8 miles were relatively peaceful. There were a few smaller ships that I noticed way off in the distance. Even through the wind, I could hear the little hums of them. There was only one that came close to me. It stopped about 40 yards before turning around and heading back the way it came. My heart was racing.

I walked and ducked behind cover for a few hours when I spotted a row of houses that gave me a certain feeling. I picked a one story, maroon colored house. It was second to last in the row of houses. It looked just slightly in better shape than the rest of them. I peaked in the windows and saw a large open room with a few objects fallen over. There were a few doors leading to other rooms, but not many. That was good. Less places for dangerous things to pop out of.

There were clothes, and other things that had just recently been abandoned. The people who lived here fled and suddenly some things were no longer needed. I wondered if the people whose house I was in sneaking in would ever come back.

The back door was unlocked. Inside I called out gently to see if anyone or anything would answer. I didn’t hear anything. Not even a mouse. Inside, the electricity was still on. That was surprising to me.

Before settling down, I checked the other rooms. One was a bathroom with a show and a window that could see down the street. The other was a bedroom with a soft looking bed. It had a window that looked out a different side of the house. Beds like that now scared me.

What if I was so comfortable that I slept in and something attacked me. I didn’t want to wake up to anything like that. But man, what a luxury it would have been. I never realized how awesome having a bed was until all this crazy shit went down.

All the rooms were empty, so I took off the bag, let out a big sigh, and let my body relax. There was cold water in the fridge which was painfully relieving and ice cold as it traveled down my sore throat. That made me feel the best I had since the attack.

I looked out as many of the windows as I could to make sure it was clear before looking for something to eat. I ended up finding some bread and peanut butter and added some of the honey that was still on the counter.

There was a kitchen table, but I ate while peeking out the different windows. Looking down the street. Looking up. Looking behind the house. Looking down the street. Looking up at the sky. Looking behind the house. I did that pattern until all the food was gone and I had to go to the bathroom.

The wind had started to calm down outside. The only noises I could hear were way off in the distance. So, I went into the bathroom and tested the shower. By God the water got hot and it felt amazing.

It was my first shower since the attack and it was incredible. I was starting to understand how many things I took for granted. The window was in perfect position from where I stood in the shower and I could see the whole street up. Thankfully nothing was out there and the noises from way off in the distance, stayed way off in the distance.

When my mind relaxed, I began to think about the ‘thing’ the Doctor was so worried about? If I’m meant to know, I will know, is something that started repeating in my mind. I have no idea where it came from.

My first step was to reach a base. That and stay alive. Luckily, I hadn’t run into any other trouble so far. Was it luck and how long would that last?
